The Importance of Networking in Your Job Search

You’ve probably heard the saying, looking for a job is a full time job, and if you are in the midst of a job search I’m sure you would agree.  Finding a job takes time, energy, and dedication.  You spend your days scouring the want ads, surfing the web job boards, and sending out resumes.  However, if you are looking for a job, it’s essential that you don’t overlook networking as a key component in your search.

Networking is all about building relationships, which takes effort, and is a give and take.  The goal of networking is to open yourself up to opportunities that might not have been available otherwise.  Another part of networking is reciprocating for others when you can; helping others will make them more likely to help you when they can and in turn builds solid relationships.

Another part of networking is being visible.  Hiding behind your computer is no way to network.  You need to get out there and be seen.  Attend industry functions, invite someone for lunch or coffee to explore new opportunities, keep in contact with former colleagues, and reach out to those that may expand your professional circle.

Preparation is a necessary part of networking, especially for those individuals who deems themselves shy or introverted.  Write up a short sales pitch, some of your key attributes, and your goals.  If you dread social situations or meeting new people, having a script to work from will ease your anxiety.  Of course, you can’t script every moment but be yourself and relax.  The more you network, the easier it will be.

Another area of preparation is to have a current resume, and an up to date LinkedIn profile; you can link your resume to your profile so don’t forget to do that!  You never know when you may meet someone that you will want to connect with so having business cards with your contact information and your LinkedIn profile address is a great idea.  You can get free cards, only pay S&H, at vistaprint.com.

So get out there and start networking your way to a new job!
